''Derrick "Smoker" Freeman''' (born May 17, 1974) is an American musician, drummer, songwriter, bandleader, actor, and podcast host, best known for his innovative contributions to the New Orleans music scene. Originally from Houston, Texas, Freeman is recognized for blending jazz, funk, hip-hop, second-line rhythms, and social commentary into a distinctive sound that bridges tradition and modernity. Freeman became a fixture in New Orleans’ music landscape in the 1990s, performing regularly with Kermit Ruffins and gaining experience as a sideman in various jazz, funk, and brass band projects. He toured internationally with Ruffins' Barbeque Swingers, and over time developed a reputation for his energetic drumming, powerful vocals, and crowd command.
