Nerf the World is a Gulf Coast–based trio that thrives on high-energy improvisation, deep-pocket grooves, and fearless exploration. Blending experimental funk, jazz fusion, and soul, their music is a living, breathing conversation — equal parts technical mastery and spontaneous creativity. Formed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the group quickly developed a reputation for electrifying live shows where no two performances are ever the same. The band features three accomplished musicians whose collective experience spans decades and genres: • Chris Spies (keys), known throughout the Gulf Coast and New Orleans as “Spies on the Keys,” is a master of the Hammond organ and synthesizers. With credits ranging from the Honey Island Swamp Band to Matador! Soul Sounds, his jazz and funk sensibilities give Nerf the World both grit and sophistication. • John Milham (drums) is an in-demand drummer and composer whose versatile career has taken him from jazz studies at Berklee to collaborations with Bo Diddley, George Porter Jr., and Grayson Capps. His rhythmic intuition and improvisational drive fuel the trio’s expansive grooves. • Brooks Hubbert III (guitar/mandolin/vocals) brings a wide-ranging musical vocabulary rooted in psychedelic rock, metal, blues, bluegrass, and beyond. Known for his ability to stretch grooves into uncharted territory while maintaining a sense of feel and flow, Brooks brings both fire and finesse to every performance. Together, these three musicians create a sound that is both grounded and exploratory — rooted in funk’s irresistible rhythm, expanded through jazz’s harmonic freedom, and elevated by soul’s emotional resonance.
